In order to enhance the communication between the Confucius Institute and affiliated Confucius Classrooms, improve Chinese language and culture teaching as well as serve the local communities, UCD Confucius Institute hosted its second working meeting for Confucius Classrooms on 10th of March, 2016. The 2016 Irish Confucius Cup Go (weiqi) and Chinese Chess Tournament was held on March 5th and 6th Dublin. Sixty competitors from 12 countries including Czech Republic, France, Germany, UK, Ireland, South Korea, China etc. participated in the tournament which was co-organised by UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland and Irish Go Association. With the invitation of H.E. Jianguo Xu, Chinese Ambassador to Ireland, Secretary General of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) of Ireland, Mr Niall Burgess visited UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland on March 2nd 2016. After a brief meeting with Professor Andrew Deeks, UCD President, Ambassador Xu and Mr Burgess met with teaching staff from the UCD Confucius Institute. They also sat in on a Chinese class in UCD before visiting the Confucius Classroom at Jesus and Mary College Our Lady’s Grove. Among the guests were Mr Xiaochuang Wu, First Secretary of the Chinese Embassy, Mr Xiongwen Pan, Director of the Political Division of the Chinese Embassy and Ms Maeve Collins, Regional Director of the Asia Pacific Division of DFAT. On February 25, the 30th ‘Confucius PhD Students Forum’ was successfully held at UCD. Professor Robert Bogdan Staszewski, a world renowned scholar from UCD School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Ms Hong Xu, a PhD candidate from UCD School of Classics, shared her research on the foreign policy of Philip V of Macedon with all the participants.
